About the Author

Judith Klausner is a migrainey land mammal from Somerville, Massachusetts. She channels her experience of invisible disability (and everything else) into her creative endeavors. She often makes art using unusual materials from her surroundings, and plays with her food both recreationally and professionally. When not creating works of art, she likes to throw fancy dress tea parties. Seeing a lack of characters like herself in picture books, Judith set to work contributing to filling this void, and she hopes that Noah will help other disabled folks of all ages feel less isolated.

Judith Klausner's new book Noah the Narwhal: A Tale of Downs and Ups, is a very welcome arrival for teachers and parents of children in Grades K-3. As a career early childhood and special education teacher, I am eager to recommend this insightful and engaging story of Noah the Narwhal, whose migraines make him feel as if his tusk is pointing into his head instead of out. All the features of best literature for children are here, from the captivating theme of conflict and resolution, to the delightful illustrations by Sarah Gould which evoke with simple lines much deeper emotions. It would be easy to shelve this story as a "message book" about a hidden, chronic disability, but it goes well beyond that as a positive story of trust and friendship. Heads up, school librarians- this a great read-aloud story!

This is a fabulous picture book. The illustrations are adorable and emotive, and the story is heartwarming and a wonderful introduction the being a supportive friend/spouse/co-worker to people suffering from chronic pain conditions. Even if you don't have anyone in your life suffering from chronic migraines or other chronic pain conditions, Noah is a great way to help kids (& adults) learn more about an otherwise invisible disability.

I LOVED this book! The message is clear and meaningful and the story is accessible to all. I brought it in to my English Language Learning High School students and they stayed after school to read the story out loud and use the language to add to their vocabulary list. My students often use children's books to learn, since the language is typically easier. but often feel babied or upset about reading books for children. They didn't seem to feel that with this book. They really related to the refrain that "today is not yesterday." The day after our after-school reading, students who had not been there asked to borrow the book so they would understand what everyone else was talking about.

This book tells a wonderful story and is delightfully illustrated. It also tells a very important story, one that many individuals with invisible disabilities know too well. In this case, Noah suffers from migraines and this story shows a snapshot of his life, highlights the judgments his friends make, and ultimately encourages empathy and love. As someone with an invisible disability and a special education teacher, I was thrilled to have a book with a main character who has a disability. As a teacher, I know this book is accessible enough for very young children but I also recommend this as a readaloud for older students. Like many of the best children's books, there are multiple layers and messages in addition to a lovable story.

This book teaches kids with chronic illnesses that they are not alone, and they are worthy of love and friendship. It teaches kids without chronic illnesses how to be empathetic to those who do have these illnesses. And it does it all in a very adorable, easy to follow way. This book provides much needed visibility of what "invisible illnesses" are like and how to live with them, and how to love those who do.

This is a great story with beautiful illustrations! Noah is learning how to cope with his invisible illness and his friends learn a valuable lesson about acceptance. This book is great for all children, whether they have someone in their life who suffers from an invisible illness or not. We can all learn to be a little more like Noah and his friends.

Wonderful story, and wonderful illustrations! (Of course, we could be a touch biased there...!)The story is broadly applicable, not just for migraine sufferers, because it reminds us that everyone can have a bad day, and it's important to be supportive and forgiving and remember the good times too."Today is not yesterday" - great line. And really contributes to making this good for smaller children, since the repetition through the story arc works well with little kids. I liked the illustrated feelings, like a headache being a head "full of sea urchins".

This book legitimately made me cry. In a great way, of course. As someone who suffers from chronic pain, this book speaks to me on a fundamental level, but it can be applied to anyone who's ever felt inadequate or "less than" because of a health condition or mental issue. Give this to anyone who doesn't understand an invisible disability or illness, and you might get them to understand it a little more. Plus, the writing is charming and the artwork is amazing.
