This is an essential account of the originators of Jamaican popular music. It is organized as biographies of individuals who set up and then we're students of the famous Alpha Boys School. Starting with the history of t he school itself and the circumstances that brought it into being and providing through the famous alumni who were essential in creating Ska, Rocksteady and proceeding through to dancehall artists of modern day. It also includes some of Jamaica's jazz luminaries who passed through the Alpha music program. The book left me wishing for more. After finishing it I was ready for more of the history of Jamaican music and the people who made it happen. I can't wait for the next book by Heather Augustyn or Adam Reeves. It is an essential element on the bookshelf of anyone who cares about Jamaican popular culture.

Well worth the wait -- if you love the deep mystic energy and spirituality of men like Don Drummond and Rico, it's a meditative read. Interestingly, the authors have also paid respect to the Alpha boys who made it to England, and created life changing music in the heart of the ghetto in East and North London. Check out the outstanding chapters on ONU Sound roots rocker drummer and spiritual corner stone, Eskimo Fox.A beautiful book.
Thorough and well written. Over 40 artists included with biographies of their lives, so what is wonderful about this is if you aren't interested in one particular musician, you can easily skip that chapter and go to the next. Tons of exclusive photos and interviews. Brilliant book.
