Sujatha Gidla was born an untouchable in Andhra Pradesh, India. She studied physics at the Regional Engineering College, Warangal. Her writing has appeared in The Oxford India Anthology of Telugu Dalit Writing. She lives in New York and works as a conductor on the subway.

Fascinating account of the author's famous uncle and her long-suffering mother, contextualized by an account of Indian history around the time of its gaining independence from Great Britain. (Her uncle was a poet and political activist.) The caste system may seem "exotic" to us in the West, but the kinds of prejudice and discrimination associated with the status of being an "untouchable" are depressingly familiar. Also depressingly familiar is the profound sexism of even the most politically radical men. I've still got a little bit to go as I write, but I will say that the account becomes a little too thorough in the second half of the book at the expense of cogency. I suppose I am saying that some cutting would have made it a better book aesthetically. But it is never boring.

This is a devastating, inspiring and highly informative book by a clear-thinking and courageous author. I read this book in two days without putting it down. The biggest eye-opener for me was how casteism is perpetrated by Hindus, Christians, Muslims, Communists -- everyone. Casteism is even perpetrated by Dalits towards other Dalits. This doesn't exonerate Hindus or anyone at all--it just shifts the framework away from Hindus being the only perpetrators. While I am left with more questions and doubts than answers about caste and how to dismantle it, this book increases my resolve to continue my work to build a progressive and pluralistic, anti-caste Hindu society. I recommend this book highly.

What a fantastic book in todays world of opinions. Objective, factual, descriptive, it describes the life and underlying struggles of Andhra pradesh and india in a way that i cannonly describe as truthful

Powerfully told family history of a politically active Christian Untouchable family from India’s 20th century. The stories of several family members’ lives are painstakingly recounted, and with them some of India’s vast population’s religious, gender, caste and political schisms and divides. Life there has not been even remotely easy - just how hard is a bruising eye-opener.

An amazing detailed family history about a class in India that usually has no voice. I hope the author continues to write more about herself, her family and India!

I have finished the book. It is a very interesting history rooted in a family's experiences. This is an aspect of Indian history I was completely unfamiliar with. Thank you to Sujatha Gilda.

Very interesting to learn about the Caste system in India told through one family. The stories dragged a little at times but worth the read.

The introduction and prelude were the only parts I liked. So disappointing in the rest. Could not finish.
