This book changed my life. It is truly a story for all ages and for all time. Sterling North clearly describes the Wisconsin that few of us have been lucky enough to experience. It is more than a story about a boy and his best friend. It is a story proving, indisputably the importance and necessity of maintaining and protecting our natural areas and wildlife. An effort inseparable from the quality of all life.Sterling North's most profound observation: "Somewhere it must all be recorded, as insects are captured in amber - that day on the river: transcribed in Brule (river) water, written on the autumn air, safe at least in my memory." And if it is not there, on the river Brule in Wisconsin, then reading, "Rascal - A Memoir Of A Better Era," must be read and reread by all.
This is a great book for kids who are interested in the outdoors, animals, science, and naturalism. Mr. North recalls one year of his childhood which took place during WWI and the Spanish Influenza epidemic. It is more than just the story of a friendship between him and his pet raccoon, Rascal; it is the story of how young Sterling relates to nature and his world. Granted, Sterling was the child of a judge and his education probably was more than most receive today, but he was well acquainted with the names from botany, geology, and more. Though this book takes place in Wisconsin, a teacher or parent could use this to interest a young person in their own home state and activities outdoors. A great environmental book for elementary to middle school aged readers and their families or educators.
I first read this captivating story in 1968, exactly fifty years after author Sterling North befriended his little raccoon. I was ten years old. The book was an abridged version for young people called "Little Rascal." I read the full "Rascal" just before the Disney movie came out in 1969, then saw the movie. I've read the book several times since, including just recently.This story mesmerized me so much that, for several years, I was obsessed with getting my own pet raccoon. Eventually I did, at age eleven, the same age North adopted Rascal. A few years later, while visiting my aunt in New Jersey, I actually telephoned Mr. North, who was retired and living in Morristown - his wife said he was very ill, but told me she would tell him I called. He sadly passed away not long afterwards.I'm not sure why I was so taken with this book, but I know much of it has to do with North's ability to weave a tale. Reading "Rascal" again as an adult reinforces that opinion. There's a lot more here than just a story of about a boy frolicking with a wild animal. North vividly recreates a bygone time, when hickory and walnut hunting, whippoorwill sighting, and trotter races weren't corny anachronisms. As a young reviewer correctly noted, his relationship with the lovable, intelligent Rascal was a true friendship. North invested human characteristics in his furry hero, but without stretching credulity or sounding trite. Only eleven, North had already experienced tragedy and stress in his young life - his mother had died when he was seven, his father was attentive but detached, and his brother was far away in France fighting in World War I. Rascal helps pull North into a world of humor and sunshine...and at least one jarring awakening. After seeing a picture of a trapped raccoon on the cover of his fur catalogue, the image of Rascal's gentle, inquisitive hand in a jaw trap is too much for the sensitive boy, and he decides to give up trapping. He declares a "peace" with nature on the same day as Armistice Day. North concludes the chapter with the memorable sentence: "It is perhaps the only peace treaty that was ever kept."If you're a young person, I know you'll enjoy this warm book many times, like I did. And if you're no longer young, read it - and savor it - for yourself.
Recently, now at the age of 61, I reread this book, which was my childhood favorite. The memories and images it brought back to me are precious and priceless. It still stands as one of my favorite books. Share it with your children. Enjoy.
I've read many books before. But I don't think there's a book I enjoyed more then this. This book isn't your generic book where everyone dies, blah blah blah romance. This book was slow, and because of that very touching. Anyone could enjoy this book. If you have a spare 6 dollars buy this book now.
Very satisfied with this book. The condition of the book and the price of it were very satisfactory to me. It would have been very expensive if I had bought it at Barnes and Noble because it would have to be ordered. It was from a school library and still had the name of the school and the checkout card in it. It liked that because it brought back memories of how I used to check out books both at school and the public library!
Oh my gosh! I really enjoyed this again. It's been 40 years since I have read this. What a classic! It's such a relaxing book that takes you back to a simpler time. Loved it!
I used this for a class read aloud. My class loved it!!! They are 4th graders, but really enjoyed the story line and the peek into an historical period that was previously unknown to them. Sterling was a great narrator, and the kids connected with his point of view! Timeless!!
