This review only deals with the Kindle version of the book. In my view it is simply terrible: Navigation between sections is awful and complicated, the maps are tiny and can't be zoomed, let alone the fact that there are no hyperlinks: you see a landmark on the map, but it doesn't make sense clicking it, the map is not interactive at all.. It's very hard to find anything useful, and there are no photographs making any sense, which was typically the primary reason why I was purchasing DK travel guides.It is obvious that whoever was porting this guide to the Kindle platform did everything mechanically, without thinking or trying to embrace the new capabilities. This guide was a complete waste of money, so do not repeat my mistake!It's a pity one can't return Kindle books like mobile applications... Having looked at the book for five minutes, I immediately wanted to return it.
I have been a big fan of DK's "Top 10" books for over a decade and have used them exptensively throughout Europe/eastern Europe. Small in size and weight, they are perfect for slipping into a pocket or purse without being cumbersome. They pack tons of info in each book, all the top attractions and even those "off the beaten path" for a variety of tastes, preferences and activities.On Puerto Rico edition; H was born/raised there, we still have family there and visit frequently. We have given this book to several of our friends when they visit PR. We have found it to be accurate and comprehensive. Enjoy your trip!
We did not see everything recommended in the book, but most of what we saw lived up to it's write-up. There is a map that is part of the cover of the book and an extra one tucked into a plastic pocket. I wondered why they might include an extra map and then when my daughter and her friend wanted to go shopping while we went to the fort,it turned our great to have the extra map that I gave to them so they could find their way around and know where to meet us when we were done. The main highways in PR are good, but if you get onto one that is even a road the next level down on the map, it is likely to be very small and windy and slow. It will take you much longer than you might think to get somewhere. Stick to the main highways as long as you can even if it seems to be a less direct route if you are time constrained at all. One thing we saw, Tibes Ceremonial Park, was OK, but it took us most of a day to get there and back from our condo and it wasn't worth that much time. It is in the top 10. In all fairness, Ponce is a major area and is near Tibes and we didn't go there because we didn't have the time that day. Maybe if we had gone there we would have thought the drive to that area was more worth the time. The Fort in Old San Juan was very good and there is much more to see and do there in addition. The biobay in Las Croabas was terrific and so was El Yunque and scuba diving out of Puerta del Rey. Lots to see on the east coast. We'll have to go back to see more!
This is a easy to read book and gives you tons of information that you certainly need to know if you are vacationing in Puerto Rico. I am native form the island, born and raised, I moved to the states about 4 year ago. I am planing to go visiting with my boyfriend who has never being and I wanted to be able to show him several things to do and plan for our vacation. It is divided in each region of the island depending on where you plan to stay you can manage and see different activities. It also has some sort of Tour depending on the region where it suggest several activities to do. It includes important facts and phone numbers and certainly is a great buy for the price. One of the most easy to follow, friendly user travel book that I've found.
I love this series of DK travel guide books.... always have. There are maps in the text and a separate plastic covered map which can be used independently of the guide. There are lists of best beaches, places to eat, places to go, etc. Information on outdoor activities, museums, hotels, bars and restaurants, hiking trails, etc. Can't wait for my trip!
The first hand experiences of the participants who helped prepare this book provided a clear view of the top 10 sites to visit, activities, restaurants, shopping spots, etc. We had a wonderful vacation!
This guide is useful to quickly identify the main items of interest in Puerto Rico as a whole, and also in major cities and regions (it is a list of "Top 10" things to see, places to stay, restaurants, etc., first for Puerto Rico as a whole and then for individual cities or regions.) The major sites get a bit more treatment in the form of their own top-10 list of things to see/do at that site, but most items just get a paragraph. One warning: we went to Ponce for the Carnival, and found that almost all the restaurants listed for that city are now out of business. Most of the restaurants listed for San Juan still seemed to be in operation.
I've had good luck with dk travel books in the past, and because this book was so cheap I took a shot this one would be all I needed for Puerto Rico. I also bought this book because the map was included. Do not buy this book because the map is included, because the map is of very poor quality. While the books guidance is good, arranging contents by top 10 is irritating when you're actual in PR and trying to find guidance.It is a nice size, but you get what you pay for.
