This book is very successful in being a guide for the expat. It is special not only because it provides so much useful information, but also because it is based on the author's own experience of his life in Chennai extending to a number of years. It is thus almost an 'autobiographical guide' - much of it is based on the author's own observations and experiences, and small parts of it on information from locals and other expats, whom it quotes in almost every chapter. It is thus very different in tone from travel-guides on Madras/Chennai. It is also different from so many books that capture the city's history or its cultural richness. Though one could get a few tips from it on what to see/do in Chennai, its aim is to arm a potential expat with all they would need to know, including where to start. And, because it has to dive that deep, it ends up also being a wonderful set of observations on the modern city of Chennai.It is a must-read for someone (especially from the West) who is planning on a prolonged stay in Chennai in the immediate future. It would be very useful for someone who is toying with the idea of moving - or moving back - to India/Chennai some time in the future. It could be appreciated by anyone even just as a set of Chennai stories, many of which could apply to the modern urban developing world, in general.It is practical throughout, is funny in many parts, and is touching here and there.The author continues to live in Madras, so chances are this guide's informativeness can stay current and accurate.
Closest experience to living in India for 10 years. Highly recommended ! I loved the several laughable bits like "Curious locals" - These questions are quote and quote true and can be expected. Looking forward to future editions !

I will be moving to Chennai next Summer for a 4-year assignment. With this book I feel fully prepared. Very joyful and a must read. What a great idea by Peter Claridge to write this!
If only such a book existed before I first arrived in Chennai! Having lived there for a year myself, so many of the passages and advice chime perfectly with my experience of living in the city. For a foreigner new to Chennai, it's pretty much stocked full of all the kinds of things that you need to know about but would've had no idea who, how, or what to ask. A really enjoyable read as well, and totally up to date throughout, so all in all couldn't ask for more!
Brilliantly captures what expat life is line in Chennai. Peter clearly and succinctly lays out daily life through personal experience and friend's stories. An easy-to-read book for the casual traveler or potential expat. Highly recommended.
