The artwork is beautiful, like most other Games Workshop products and it radiates the dark gothic vibe of the setting. The book is an alphabetical listing of people, places and things with many pictures. A guide to me would be more verbose expounding on topics in a unified fashion rather than jumping from one to the next simply due to the letter they start with.That critique aside, I like the book. It is not in the same league as the hardback Horus Heresy offering but it serves a different purpose. You need not have read the novels to enjoy this book though it does contain complete plot summations for major characters so beware if you plan on reading the novels in the future. Reading this first will certainly tell you who betrays whom and why this man died and at whose hand.I'm a sucker for the 40k style of art, despite its over the top effects and this book contains even more things I'd never seen elsewhere.I wish Amazon, or the publisher, would include a See Inside section so people could see they encyclopedia style before ordering since the title is a bit confusing depending on your interpretation.
I am glad I purchased the book but I was hoping for a more comprehensive view of the inquisition such as recruit training through the interrogator stage to become an inquisitor and some more detailed information on the evolution of the inquisition. The dictionary A-Z format did not work for me. it was a really disappointment that there was no graphic of Ravenor's chair. I thought the graphics were a bit over the top for some of the characters presented but at least I have a better graphical point of reference. I would have preferred to pay an extra $10.00 and get an additional 25 pages with a comprehensive, non-dictionary view of the inquisition.Overall I am glad that this publication was created and was looking forward to the dark secrets that I thought would be revealed.
I cam to the Warhammer 40K universe through Dan Abnett's Ravenor and Eisenhorn trilogies, both of which feature Inquisitors. I've happily read other Warhammer novels. There seems to be something about the distopian universe Warhammer is in that inspires writers.I found the guide to be a lot of fun. The only problem is that more than half of the material comes from Abnett's novel. If you've read them, you already know half the entries in the guide. I had hoped for more new material.If you like Warhammer and haven't read Abnett's stuff, this will be rewarding. Then go read the books.
This is an encyclopedia, primarily of Abnett's Inquisition stories (Eisenhorn, Ravenor etc), not a guide to the Inquisition. I was expecting something more along the lines of the Sabatt crusade art + text book that Abnett had done. This doesn't even really feature any original artwork. This is a pretty bad miss on the part of the Black Library. If they were going to do an encyclopedia, at least they could have done a bit more to let you know what the sources of some the characters etc were. There is little here to help you fluff out your background for 40k armies, help you write your own 40k fan story, etc. I'm not sure what purpose this fills in my 40k library. Give this one a miss if your Black Library budget is limited.
As the title says, this book provides a wealth of information about the 40k background, pulling from a multitude of sources and condensing everything into a easy to search format. The illustrations are beautifully done and perfect for the setting. While it dosen't have any rules, it does mention many special characters from the tabletop game and many of the books. Especially useful if you're trying to tackle the "Lord High Militant" section of the 40k quiz book!
Great book with nice details and discriptions on things related to the inquisition within the warhammer universe. Also has nice artwork within as well.
If you're a hard core fan of the Inquisition this is the book for you. If you're less of a fan of the Inquisition and simple enjoy a well written and produced product, you'll enjoy this as well.
I found this to be a fantastic introduction to the concepts and people in the Imperium; it is basically an illustrated encyclopedia, giving you important names, dates, places, etc. interspersed with more trivial bits of flavor here and there.
